10/5/09 12:37 pm - DnD Week 2 - Knowledge and Double Agentry

The party began their explorations of Anton by checking out the Market, wherein Hus bought an emaciated cat from a brothel/dead cat vendor, Mel bought an aphrodisiac fruit, Anthos sold off his loot, and all party members upgraded their gear. After this, the party investigated the Temple of Syrinx, a tall obelisk shaped building of great mystery. Inside they found three Priests, dark, gaunt, evil looking men.
While the non-rogue members kept the priests occupied through religious discussion, annoyance, or intimidation, Anthos and Mel investigated the upper floors of the Temple, which held strange machinery and numerous skulls, indicating Human Sacrifice to power some arcane or fell ability over the town.
Later, after meeting and gaining somewhat shady employment from By-Tor, the new magistrate of Anton, the group investigated the local prison. Anthos, disguised as a Priest of the Temple using a stolen robe, discovered a former Guard Captain and a Lieutennant to the recently ousted ruler, Snow Dog. Imprisoned for their loyalty and for information, the men revealed that By-Tor, his bandit horde, and the Temples arrived five years prior and deposed Snow Dog and took control over the city through intimidation and arcane influence.
Keeping this in mind, the party left on their job for By-Tor: roughing up merchants. They convinced the merchants they encountered to turn away, and the party convinced By-Tor that they had been killed. Sent out on a second errand, dealing with "religious zealots", the party actually encountered Snow Dog and his entourage in disguise, heading for Anton to try and reclaim it. The party then joined Snow Dog's forces and followed him to the Cave of Tits, wherein the City of Tits and all of the refugees of Anton hid.

New Comic!

Nuf sed, really.

9/26/09 12:04 am - DnD Week 1 - Beginnings and Hobos

The party started off by being rounded up by an armored Cleric who remains unnamed. Hüs, the Dwarf Paladin spends her time preaching the glories of Bahamut via pamphlets she passes out. Mel, the 5'11" albino human rogue seems to dislike everyone. Sgt. Muffin (aka Eagle Eyes) is a halfling soldier, preferring the longbow and knife, butt of many of Mel's jokes. (Corey) is a Dragonborn fighter, seeking revenge on a fellow Dragonborn, while (Tony) enjoys theivery, stealing artefacts, and stabbing things.

The initial phase of the plan was clearing out a hobo camp for a base of operations in the land. Upon frightening off the hobo, the party began to relax for the night, but was attacked by the Hobo's friends: a band of brigands who were quickly dispatched along with the traitorous Hobo.

Upon discovering a city to the North wherein more bandits under the command of a bandit lord named By-Tor were causing trouble, the party set off encountering an empty tower (with a quickly eaten rat) and a roving badger. They were greeted at the gates of the northern city by suspicious guards, and were ushered in to a "Guest Inn" where they met a fat traveling Merchant, and two suspicious men. The pair of Rogues snuck out and explored the sewers, attempting to listen in on the guards, while "Eagle Eyes" climbed on to the roof and located the Tower in the center of town. The two rogues found that the guards were coming to check the whereabouts of their new travelers and returned to warn the rest of the party. Due to modest bluffing skills and a bit of distraction on (Tony)'s part, the Guard Captain was satisfied and left the party alone.

The party is suspicious of By-Tor and the sudden appearance of new guards in town and the equally sudden disappearance of the marauding bandits. The party also is unaware of the nature of their mission, or the goals of the Cleric that recruited them.

NEW COMIC UP!

We make fun of Brian Williams sometimes, and Obama, and Star Wars, but often not at the same time.

Tonight we did.

9/21/09 01:11 pm - Highland Games and DnD

Got back from the Games last night after coming back through Saco to celebrate Amanda's Mom's birthdee. We each got some sweet hats (four in total), and had a good time up in New Hampshire.

The main event for us at the Games was the Laphroaig/Ardmore whiskey tasting. We got to sample the Laphroaig 10 year, 10 year quarter cask, and the now near impossible to find 15 year. If you see a bottle of Laphroaig 15 anywhere, buy it, they've stopped making it and are switching over to an 18 year, not to mention that it is FANTASTIC. We also got a taste of the Ardmore Highland Single Malt, which has an interesting story. Ardmore's been making a single malt for over a hundred years, but they've sold exclusively to blenders and never released their own bottles. When Laphroaig bought Ardmore they discovered the wonderful single malt that's been hidden in blendeds for a century. If I find a bottle of this, it's mine.

What do you call a 500-year-old Scot? Peat.

All of the whiskeys were excellent, Simon (the Whiskey ambassador) was great, and John the distillery manager (straight from Islay) was there as well to give us an insight into production and what to taste for when we sipped his works. We were also invited to join the "Friends of Laphroaig", you fill out a card and you receive a complimentary square foot of land on Islay, and when you visit the Laphroaig distillery there, you get your rent given to you, a dram of Laphroaig Single Malt. I am going to Scotland. Someday.

We also got a start on our roleplaying on Fridee, though we weren't able to get to playing due to time constraints. As it stands it looks like we'll have two rogues and two fighters, with myself being the DM/Cleric. More on this as it develops.

9/6/09 01:15 pm - Who said modern cavalry meant tanks?

9/1/09 03:22 pm - Book taxes

Apparently there's a new tax deal where you can get a tax credit/rebate/refund thing for buying college textbooks. Apparently it's as easy as saving the receipt and marking it down come tax time. Apparently Obama loves this enough that he wants to rub himself on it.

Where was this the past six semesters?

8/21/09 09:12 am - Beer Break Mk. VIII

Tried out a new beer in my bread last night, Seadog Blueberry Ale. Now, on its own, this beer is tasty, but hits you in the face with blueberry flavor. It is not a subtle beer, but it does not pretend to be such. Drinking this, I decided to see how much of that flavr carried over to the lazy man's bread.

The end result was a lumpy looking thing, it rose higher than any beer bread I've created thus far, it has a hard crust (I think I left it a hair too long in the oven), but it smells like blueberries when you bite into it, and it does have a hint of blueberry flavr.

All in all, a success, though a surprise result. I think this is the one I'll bring upta camp this weekend.

8/20/09 02:14 pm - Emulator funs

Been playing a fair amount of Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, and Sonic and Knuckles (all via emulator) at work when there's nothing to do, and I've come across a few discoveries:

1: I'm still not terribly good at them. I've gotten fairly far in Sonic 2 though.

2: It's great when my laptop lags playing them, because the Sega Genesis never, ever, lagged, but this Inspiron laptop (albeit and old one) just can't handle the graphics.

3: I still don't know why they've never made a good 3D Sonic game. I don't know why they never tried making a Sonic side-scroller with 3D models, platforms, and backgrounds. I know the Sonic Unleashed game tried it, but then you turned into a Were-hog. Stupid.

8/11/09 12:05 pm - And I thought my school had less BS than others

Apparently because I'm taking an internship (which bumps me up to 18 credits) I have been given a choice of paying extra tuition for the extra 3 credits, or I drop a class (which would most likely put me behind or something).

I don't know how much the extra tuition is, but why should I have to pay to take on an internship? It already cuts my workable hours and only one member of the NESCom faculty is involved with the process, and he's not a teacher in this instance.

8/6/09 07:59 pm - I had to make this

Numerous people, not all of them, but several people each week will attempt to sit at this machine in the lab. Not only is this machine the only G4 tower we have, and the only old Apple cinema display we have (these marking it as something not right in our little world), but it is also the only machine that is in no way plugged in to anything.

8/5/09 03:13 pm - Ever seen a bear carry artillery shells?

Wojtek, the soldier bear.

Moar about ze bear. Ignore every time the dude says "fuck" and it's a sweet article. About a bear. Who fought in WWII.

This may be proof that Stephen Colbert is right about bears taking over the world, but the synopsis is this:

Polish troops in Iran at the start of WWII buy a bear cub off a kid, they raise him on beer, cigarettes, and delicious Polish food and enlist him in the Polish Army. He became a private, had a serial number, and traveled with the artillery unit. During the battle of Monte Casino, he carried shells from truck to gun, no fooling. He also apparently helped capture a spy. All of this is actually backed up by historical evidence and military reports. He spent the rest of his days at the Edinburgh Zoo, and died a happy twenty two year old, five hundred pound, six foot tall, furry, clawed, veteran.

8/5/09 12:09 pm - Thoughts on fanfiction

I think this guest comic over at Questionable Content sums up most fan-fiction, and the twilight novels, quite well.

Says the guy writing a Star Wars story.

7/31/09 12:56 pm - Knew knowledge

Just found out that Bangor International Airport is a potential emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle.

Barring disaster, I'd love to see that sucker land up here.

7/21/09 09:48 pm - Mainers fish crab

Just found out reading the F/V Wizard's webpage that one of the deckhands, one Crosby LeVeen, is from Manchester, Maine. One of our own is out in Alaska and on the Discovery Channel haulin crustaceans.

Wacky

7/16/09 12:19 pm - It's like getting up twice

Helped run a remote broadcast for KISS 94.5 today, one of the stations I intern for. They were at a Dunkin' Donuts, collecting donations of school supplies for families in need (I almost typed 'needy families' which just sounds like they have attachment issues). I helped them move cases of notebooks and got a free breakfast from the Dunkin' Donuts staff. I was prepared to pay, but they said I was all set, and I am not one to turn down free food. After a few hours of that, I went to my paying job, at 8. It just felt weird going from one half job to a job in the same morning.

So, what is everyone doing next weekend? Amanda's going to come up to visit, but I will be working, so who wants to come up and crash at our place in Orono to keep Arch company whilst I slave away at the lab? Which has two sweet new plasma tvs. Which you can totally hook games up to. While I work.

Eh?

7/15/09 09:21 am - One Day

One day in the future (so movies and video games tell us) we will have this powerful (though unwieldy and largely impractical) firearm:

It's a Squad Automatic Weapon (a light machine gun) with a suppressor on the barrel and a grenade launcher mounted under it, designed to be slung over the shoulder and held like a chainsaw. Think the Smartgun machine gun from Aliens, with a grenade launcher.

7/7/09 09:43 pm - Words mk.II

Love- For the past four and a half years, Arch and I have been happily together, such to the point that some people speak of us as a unit. I don't mind that at all, and I'm looking to keep it that way.

Jesus- Due to my hair (facial and otherwise), and certain robes I've been known to wear, I've been told I look like the Christ. At one point during a production of Julius Caesar, my fellow cast members and I (all robed) stood me up a la crucifix silhouetted against a red lit background. Surprised the directors nicely.

Guitar- Been playing for about four-five years now, nothing at all serious, mostly noodling around with a practice amp and in front of a coffee house a handful of times, but I enjoy it. My technical ability is pretty much capped at playing the synth riff to "The Final Countdown".

Plungers- These have become part of my lifestyle largely since the inception of Saco's Angels, and I must say, they look quite nice suctioned over Ray's nipples.

Fur Pants- My legs have been referred as such. I've had hairy legs for most of my life, and it is to the point where they provide mild insulation while I wear my kilt in the cold climates of Maine.

PS: Ted Nugent is in your house.

7/7/09 12:28 pm - Mornings and boffs

The past few years of working jobs with normal hours has turned me into much more of a morning person than I was, but not morning enough to want to really shoot for being a morning show DJ. Case in point, I get up at 5 (not that unreasonable) to be at the station for 6 when the show starts, I usually get there at around the same time one of the hosts does. The other guy (who also teaches at NESCOM) gets up at 3. THREE AM! That's just nuts.

ON a completely unrelated note, I offer up our apartment for a boffer building weekend between friends. We've got a Home Depot within driving distance, though tools should be brought up if we do come up here.
